Concept of the Week: Oct. 14th-17th

Spelling Rules of Plural Nouns:  

  • Singular = 1
  • Plural = More than 1

1. Add -s to most nouns (desks)
2.  Add  -es  to nouns ending in s, sh, c, ch, x, or z (boxes)
3.  Add  -s  to nouns ending in an "O" if there is a vowel before the O (radios)
4.  Add  -es  to nouns ending in  O  if there is a consonant before the  O  (echoes)
5.  Add  -s  to nouns ending in  Y  if there is a vowel before the  Y  (days)
6.  Change  Y  to  I  and add  -es  if there is a consonant before the Y  (babies)
7.  Change  F  to  V  and and  -es  (1 calf - 5 calves)
8.  Some nouns keep their same spelling  (1 sheep - 5 sheep)
9.  Plural form of some nouns are irregular and change their spelling (child - children)

Spelling of Possessive Nouns:

possessive = showing possession

Possession is shown with an apostrophe and an s  ( ' s )
  • Example: My coach's words were very inspirational.   
If the noun ends in an s already, you will just use an apostrophe 
  • Example: The 3 coaches' words are very inspirational.
